The Coalition Against Witchcraft Accusations (CAWA) 16 Days Campaign to End Witch Hunt in Northern Ghana aligning with the international UN Women Campaign against Gender based violence from November 25th until december 10th 2024.
The Coalition Against Witchcraft Accusations (CAWA), is leading the charge to combat witch hunts and gender-based violence in Northern Ghana. CAWA - Action Aid Ghana, Amnesty International Ghana, End Witch Hunts, Oxfam, The Sanneh Institute, Songtaba, and WILPF Ghana (Women's International League for Peace & Freedom), is working to ensure the legal protection of women accused of witchcraft and to urge the current president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to sign the Anti Witch-hunt Bill before the upcoming presidential elections on December 7th 2024.
As part of this ongoing advocacy, CAWA collaborated with German-French photographer Ann-Christine Woehrl. The 16 days campaign along the petition read out by Prof. John Azumah was presented on November 19th at a press conference held at Christ the King Church across from the Jubilee House in Accra. It was asigned to directly address the President's office and call for immediate legislative change.
The exhibition features 16 protest billboards, each displaying one portrait from the photographers long-term project on women in Northern Ghana who have been accused of witchcraft and forced into exile. The portraits are accompanied by 16 slogans, contributed by the coalition partners, demanding an end to witch hunts and urging the Ghanaian government to pass the Anti Witch Hunt Bill.
In alignment with the UN Women call for 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, running from November 25th (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to December 10th (International Human Rights Day), CAWA’s exhibition serves as a protest against the violence, stigma, and human rights violations suffered by women accused of witchcraft. The exhibition is designed to highlight their resilience and amplify their demand for justice.
The installation will be on display at Jamestown Coffee in Accra from November 25th until December 1 and onwards unti December 10 at the Sanneh Institute, in order to engage the community and raise awareness about this urgent issue.
By showcasing these images and slogans, this exhibition amplifies the voices of marginalized women and demands immediate legal action. It is a call for both local and global audiences to stand in solidarity with the women of Northern Ghana and support CAWA’s advocacy for justice and the protection of women’s rights.
